Admiral Recruitment celebrate Diversity at the 2018 Caterer.com People Awards

For the eighth year in a row, we welcome Admiral Recruitment to our Caterer.com People Awards, this time as sponsors of the Reward & Benefits and the Diversity categories.

Admiral Recruitment was founded by Paula Rogers FIH, and for over 23 years, the company has sourced, developed and placed talent within the hospitality sector. “We are a specialist recruitment consultancy servicing four niche markets: Catering & Hospitality, Pubs, Bars & Restaurants, Commercial and Chefs,” Paula explained. “Many of our staff are former chefs, baristas, waiters and catering managers so they have the knowledge and understanding of this specialist niche and the challenges and opportunities it holds.”

Not just a team, a family

Based in the City of London and in Ealing, Admiral Recruitment has quietly established a reputation for integrity and trust. There are over 100,000 candidates on their books and their entire reputation rests on the relationships held with clients and staff. “Repeat business accounts for 90% of our portfolio growth to date,” said Paula. “This is a reflection of our team’s ability to tune into and understand the diverse needs of our candidates and clients. We’re not just a team, we’re a family. Confidentiality, honesty, fair play and diversity are the foundations of every relationship we make.”

Admiral Recruitment’s placements range from senior directorship roles to bespoke senior chefs, front of house and all roles within operations, from interim management and chefs to events, waiting & bar staff, baristas and food service assistants. “Our clients include top London restaurateurs, hoteliers, landmark venues, top FTSE companies and all of the UK’s leading corporate foodservice operators,” Paula said.

Admiral Recruitment places massive emphasis on supporting hospitality talent. “Grassroots training, in particular, is our life blood,” Paula said. “We encourage entry level people on-board and give them all of the skills and bespoke training they need to grow.”

Admiral Recruitment has invested in Membership of The Academy of Food and Wine Service (AFWS) to offer candidates vital hospitality training to equip them with essential skills.  “This is in-house ‘Art of Service’ training sessions for candidates identical to those practised and accredited by the AFWS and highly endorsed by Michelle Roux,” Paula Rogers explained.

Admiral Recruitment also supports the long term unemployed, getting them into temporary assignments and onwards into permanent roles within the hospitality sector.  “Ordinarily, many, if not all of these temps, would never be able to get through the initial recruitment process in the traditional formal process,” Paula said. “They’re often from disadvantaged backgrounds, with little experience, so we use our connections and the relationships with London-based contract caterers and hoteliers to get these candidates placed into temporary jobs in hospitality.” Many of these candidates learn new skills and grow in confidence, moving from temporary to permanent.

Sustainability and diversity

Of course, Paula and the team at Admiral Recruitment understand the problems and pressures of being a hospitality employer. “The biggest challenge is the whole pace in the market, which, at the moment, is almost in a holding position due to Brexit,” Paula said. “On the positive side, we are seeing more desire for the whole recruitment process to be centred around engagement and behaviours more than ever. The enormous benefit of this is that there is now huge focus on ethics, values, sustainability and diversity, which is fantastic. Barriers are certainly far less than ever.

“Trainee entry level is key for us, as is the value added to our clients through our Temporary division which is our greatest route for a huge number of people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom would not get into these positions through normal recruitment channels.”

Admiral Recruitment is hugely successful in doing this across all levels of hospitality, from the kitchen to junior management, junior reception, administration and sales too. “We are currently embarking on an exciting initiative involving a partnership within colleges, academies and centres working within socially deprived areas,” said Paula.
