What is the function of a great HR Team?

“A good HR team is the strategic driver of the employer brand,” said Beth Aarons, previously Area Director of Human Resources at The Dorchester and now Global Director, Dorchester Collection Academy. “They ensure that external message is carried through the business. Ideally they ensure that the employee experience mirrors that of the customer.”

Beth knows what she’s talking about. Despite stiff competition from other shortlisted employers, Baxter Storey, IHG, The Belfry Hotel & Resort and Village Hotels, The Dorchester were the proud winners of the HR Team Award at the 2017 People Awards.

The HR Team award seeks to recognise HR individuals or teams that have achieved excellence in recruitment, retention and/or development. The judges wanted to reward work that went beyond the everyday tasks surrounding Human Resources, work that is inventive, intuitive and ground-breaking.

Culture is very important

The Dorchester’s results clearly indicated exceptional revenues maintaining its position as one of the leading luxury hotels in London. “What makes us unique is that we don’t just say it, we believe in it,” said Beth. “Our culture is very important to us, as it shapes our business decisions and helps us to deliver exceptional service to our guests. Our strong ‘We Care’ culture and our core values are also integral to everything we do. When we recruit at management level, we look for people who share the same values and are able to demonstrate that they can practically apply the values. It is essential to us that managers share our passion for looking after our people.”

Focus on guest experience

Beth says that the team are extremely proud of their accomplishments. “We’re delighted with the teams and individuals who have celebrated successes in this last year,” she said. “We share a huge sense of pride when our apprentices and graduates complete their programmes and when colleagues celebrate milestone years with the company.”

Despite their success, Beth says the Dorchester team haven’t lost sight of their goals. “We have to remind ourselves daily that our focus continues to be about the guest experience. We strive to do better than we did last month, last week or even yesterday. Innovation and creativity, asking questions and listening to feedback are even more important in order to continue to be engaging and relevant.”

A huge sense of achievement

The team at The Dorchester were over the moon to win their award. “There was a huge sense of achievement and pride among the team,” Beth said. “We were so pleased to have some of our operational managers celebrate with us at the awards evening. Without their commitment to the people agenda, we would not have been able to receive this prestigious accolade.”

We congratulate The Dorchester and wish them well in all their future endeavours.
