Here we take a look at the 2017 Caterer.com People Award winner in the Diversity category; Compass Group.
A diverse and inclusive workforce
For the Diversity category, our judges look for entries that demonstrate a clear and impactful approach to developing and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workforce. They want to see initiatives that have brought measurable results in areas such as candidate and employee equality and engagement, retention rates and customer satisfaction levels.
50% female chefs by 2020
In order to support their goal of 50% female chefs by 2020, Compass Group put in place a number of measures that supported their development and opened up opportunities for progress across their sectors and created the right environment for women to enjoy working for Compass Group. This included:
- Delivering significant investment in training and development for female chefs
- Reviewing working practises and helping Compass Group managers to support shift work and flexible hours
- Inspiring women to consider working in hospitality
- Bolstering entry routes with a focus on attracting female chef apprentices
- Launching a Chef Ambassador programme to help raise awareness and support the development of future chefs
Focus on developing women in leadership positions
Through working with an external leadership development team, Compass Group conducted research both externally and from within their own organisation to help design a structured programme to support the progression of women in leadership roles. The programme aimed to support high potential women to take the next step in their career and to also help them build a network to support themselves through group coaching as they progress.
Compass Group implemented a programme for six females within the senior management team with a view to supporting promotion to the leadership team in 2018. To help further this initiative, they also organised network activities and mentoring sessions run by members of the Compass Group senior leadership team.
Focus on supporting Mums back to work
The team at Compass Group reviewed their statistics to look at how many women were returning to the organisation following maternity leave. The results were not good as some 47% of women didn’t return and many left in the first six months of returning. Internal research highlighted the need of more support to help both the returning parent and the line manager to ensure that the period before leave and the return was as smooth and easy as possible. Their aim was to deliver a programme which would increase their return rate incrementally. To deliver this, the company put in place a number of measures including:
- Support managers to have better quality conversations through new maternity toolkits and training
- All policies were rewritten to be more user-friendly
- Engaging Executive Chefs around maternity returners and flexible working
- Creating a new and expectant parents group on Workplace by Facebook – Compass Group’s preferred social engagement platform
- Implementing a survey to ensure the company constantly review and continue to improve
The team also developed a monthly dashboard to review maternity returner statistics, forming part of the governance process for the Women in Food programme board.
Compass Group launched the ‘Women in Food’ programme in 2016 to enable women not just to secure jobs within hospitality, but to thrive and succeed in leadership team positions. The company achieved a result of 36% female chefs, 49% attending talent development programmes and 42% women on the company’s chef apprenticeship programme.
