Marston’s Inns & Taverns employ 13,000 people across 1,700 pubs and 5 breweries, where their pubs are set in beautiful rural locations and their bars are fashionable city centre hangouts. Marston’s are rightly proud of their heritage, their people, their pubs and their beer which they have been brewing for over 180 year’s! Each venue serves an individual and well thought out family food menu but the pub itself remains the heart and soul of each business.
Marston’s believe that their career progression opportunities, development programmes and job creations, along with their investment and benefits packages and charity work are what sets them apart as an employer and gives them the edge over their competitors.
Caterer.com asked Marston’s Inns & Taverns to elaborate for us.
One of the key things that differentiate Marston’s as an employer are the career progression opportunities – We have a structured career path in place which enables Team Members with any level of experience to develop their skills and progress within the company, from Team Member level right the way through to General Manager.
We also have Development programmes – Our Keyholder and Chef Development Programmes enable our Team Members to progress either front of house or in the kitchen. The Programmes combine practical on the job experience with theory, through the completion of workbooks. We also have a Deputy Manager Programme, which equips our Assistant Managers with the skills and experience they need to become successful General Managers.
Investing in Job creation is also key – Our new build programme (we’re currently opening between 25 and 30 new builds per year) means that we’re creating many new jobs across the country. In 2013 we created 1,300 new jobs through our new build programme alone. We are also investing in our existing estate pubs – spending over £22 million. This ensures we can offer our employees a good working environment.
There is a competitive benefits package available to all our pub employees, which includes bonus schemes (for Head Chefs and Assistant Managers), privilege card (entitling employees to 20% of food and accommodation), 30% refreshment at work scheme, long service awards and a save as you earn scheme.
And finally our Charity work – We donated over £130,000 to good causes in 2013, and for every employee who completes our annual engagement survey, we donate £1 to a charity of their choice.
Through offering our employees rewards for their hard work and commitment, recognition for their efforts and opportunities for progression, we are able to ensure that our employees are highly engaged. Asking for their thoughts is our way of showing that we are truly interested in their feedback. We also make sure that when we get feedback, we act on it. We update our employees throughout the year on changes we’re making as a result of their engagement survey feedback.
Marston’s chose to enter Caterer.com’s Best Employers in Hospitality Awards 2014 because the Awards are so well regarded within the industry. Furthermore, as it’s based and judged solely on employee responses, it gives us an insight into how our employees engagement measures up compared to the employees of our competitors.
Winning the award has helped us in our quest to become an employer of choice. It helps to set us apart from other large employers in the industry and is recognition of our commitment to making Marston’s a great company to work for. As a company we’re incredibly proud to have won this award, and our employees feel proud to work for a company which has been recognised in this way.
We are featuring our winner logo on our recruitment materials, careers website and vacancy adverts. It’s a great talking point for our recruiters when they’re talking to candidates. The award helps us to demonstrate to prospective employees that Marston’s is a great company to work for.
The employee engagement report which we received after the Awards and is supplied by employee engagement experts People Insight, gave us significant learning’s and our results indicate that our employees clearly care about the future of Marston’s and that they’re proud of working for us (a significant proportion would recommend our venues and products). Our results also confirmed that our employees enjoy their roles, are clear on what is expected of them and are motivated to do their best at work. It’s also been reassuring to see that we compare favourably with competitors in key areas, such as Employee Involvement, Learning and Development and Management Effectiveness.
