For most people, Christmas is a magical time of year. But for many hospitality workers, December is the busiest, most pressurised month in the calendar. Worst still, for those experiencing in-work poverty, it’s a time of huge financial stress.
The Great Big Christmas Turn-on is our way of raising festive funds to help hospitality people in difficulty or crisis.
The idea is simple. On Tuesday 3 December, we’re going to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of Christmas trees turned on simultaneously. We’re targeting one thousand trees at a thousand hospitality venues across the country.
Trees can be anywhere from hotel receptions to pubs, restaurants to foodservice sites. And don’t worry if you’ve already turned on your decorations before 3 December – our turn-on need not be the first time trees or decorations are illuminated. We simply need to record the number of trees turned on simultaneously on a single day, regardless of what date they were first switched on.
For participating venues, the event offers a great platform for engaging with guests, customers and regional media. How often do you get the chance to set a Guinness World Record?
We’re grateful to hospitality technology provider, Vivid Hospitality Solutions, for driving this initiative.
Getting involved costs £99 per site, and HA will receive all proceeds from the project after direct costs are covered. Each participating venue will receive a smart plug from Vivid, which will allow us to turn on all Christmas trees at once.
HA’s principal patron, Jason Atherton, will flick the master switch on 3 December.
